Seemed like a perfectly good thing to say. It’s how I would break the silence with my roommates. Maddox just kind of looked at me like I was crazy. To my surprise, he started talking.
“Can’t complain. Got the job at your dad’s store right now; next week I am redoing Mr. Sanders’s landscaping. After that I should have enough money to buy my new computer.”
“That’s cool.” I wasn’t quite sure what to say next. Weren’t you supposed to talk about something the other person was interested in? That’s the advice I was given for going on dates, but did that apply to whatever this lunch meeting was?
“How do you get your jobs, just word of mouth? Do you put out flyers?”
He shrugged. “You know how small towns are. People talk. Be a good person, work hard, and people will hire you for whatever you are willing to do.”
I would have to take his word for it. I couldn’t wrap my mind around his way of life. The whole free-spirit thing was way beyond my comprehension. “Are you going to go to college someday? What do you do for health insurance? What— what is your plan?”
I had to know. I was dying to know.
