New Release Review - Red Pandamonium by Roan Rosser

Red Pandamonium (Chaos Menagerie #1) by Roan Rosser 4*

BLURB: When you have chaos magic, the only thing you can do is expect the unexpected.
Zombies. Shoestorms. Illicit unicorn rides. A talking red panda.
Before today Max never believed in magic, despite bad luck so terrible he used to jokingly call it a curse. Now he’s a reluctant believer. His first day as a mage he draws the attention of the magic police, not to mention the mysterious hooded figures chasing him all over downtown Portland trying to kill him with magic.
With the help of his new speed-demon red panda familiar, his fortune-telling neighbor, a gadget-obsessed witch, a grumpy vampire, and his maybe-brother, Max needs to learn to use his chaos magic, and quickly, or his ‘curse’ is going to be the end of him and the people he loves.

My Review:  I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The main character in the story was very interesting and the side characters were well fleshed out, the world building wasn't too intrusive (mostly just being modern day with hidden paranormals). I really loved the red panda familiar, and some of the spells that Max ended up creating were actually quite unique and sometimes a bit funny. I wasn't sure if the book was aimed at the YA market or not, but it certainly could be categorised as such, even though it does fit well into the Urban Fantasy genre too.

Overall I found this book amusing, cute, and just a little bit chaotic. I'd be interested in seeing where the series goes from here, but I'm not sure if the author can pull of more magical mayhem without losing the freshness and originality of this book.
