Yet again the reader is kaput!

Darn Levro reader broke again - this time the on/off switch fell off and now I can't get at my books :(

Luckily before it broke I managed to read Ruffskin by Megan Derr and since then I have reread an old favourite Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey. So on to a couple of reviews:



Ruffskin (Dance With The Devil #4)by Megan Derr 3*

My Review: I gave this only 3* because it seemed rushed and didn't really give me a feeling of a full story. There was a cameo appearance of Johnnie and Grim but the main romance of Peyton seemed like it had something missing. Not that what was there wasn't good because actually it was very good, it just wanted as much as the story deserved.

My Review: Even though I have read this book so many times the thing is falling apart (again) I am still moved to tears at the tragic tale of Vanyel. Mercedes Lackey has a knack of putting so much emotion on the page that your feel every word. In the case of this, the first one in a trilogy, it is more obvious than ever. Vanyel seems to have the ability to attract bad luck no matter what he tries to do to avoid it. The story is full of magic, action, romance and tragedy. The magic is believable, the action is bloody and the romance and tragedy go hand in hand and will bring most people to tears.

Review Of Midnight by Megan Derr

My Review: I think this is one of the few Zombie stories I have read that I truly enjoyed. Mind you Midnight is not your typical brain-eating, rotting corpse type zombie. In fact it is this total uniqueness of Midnight that drives most of the story. The action is richly described and there is a little romance and plenty of odd characters to be entranced by. Would love to read more about them in other books.

My Review:Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Publisher Through NetGalley . I'm afraid I very quickly got bored with this story. It started out alright and I was interested in Elle and why she was interviewing for a job (which is never actually named), that is until she went in for that interview and the whole thing turned into sex, sex, sex and no storyline at all. It would have been a lot better for the sex to have at least been toned down with a little background on the guys or a whole lot of world building to explain why her interview turned out the way it did. Unfortunately it read to me more like guy porn I've seen in mags like Fiesta or Mayfair. I would not recommend this to anyone who likes a good story with their sex scenes.

My Review: The main character of this book is mentioned in passing in Dance With The Devil and even that little mention made me interested in knowing more about him. This book told me lots and he was a most interesting person to read about. One of my favourite things about him is his tendency to use quotes from poems, fairy tales and the like. Like Dance With the Devil the book was split into 'Cases' but at least these were in chronological order and were really just a way of splitting the story about Johnnie and his hunt for the truth. I really would advise reading Dance With the Devil first, as it makes more sense of some of the secondary characters in this book, but it can be read as a stand alone if so desired.

My Release: The first thing that struck me was the unusual fact of werewolves in Britain! The second was the the fact that it was a VERY hot read. The storyline was complex and had an interesting concept for the werewolves. I was even OK with the fact hat she hnds up with three guys. What I could not accept readily was wolves in Britain!

My Review: The Characters in this short story had a brief appearance in some of the shorts in the last book I read by Megan Derr. I enjoyed reading more about them and the world she has created. I especially liked how she made fairy tales see more like history for the abnormals in her stories. My only complaint is I am still not sure why Vampires don't fall in love with Humans. Hopefully this will be explained in a later book.

Reviewing Dance With the Devil by Megan Derr

My Review: I liked this as it was a lot of short stories about the paranormal detective and his cases. What I wasn't so keen on was the way it was all jumbled up as far as timeline is concerned, with only the case number to tell you in advance where you were in the characters timeline. I must admit that each case had me both intrigued and fascinated, as the author has a wonderful way of making each case seem fresh and interesting, even though most of them are just normal detection stuff with the added element of paranormal creatures committing crimes or needing help. If you like m/m, paranormal, detectives and short easy to read stories teh this is one for you.

When I got the first two books of The Sundering from Netgalley, I assumed they were closely linked but found out I was mistaken. Apart from both being set in the same world they had nothing in common at all. This one was so different that I just couldn't get into it in the same way and in fact had to work hard at finishing it at all. I was constantly trying to figure things out and getting very lost. this might interest someone who knows more about the world in which it is set (The Forgotten Realms from Wizards Of The Coast for those who want to know) or who like stuff written by Paul S Kemp but it wasn't for me.

My Review: I was drawn to this because my husband has diabetes and incipient Kidney failure, so I was interested in how the author portrayed the problems these conditions can bring. I have to say she did a bang up job of being totally honest and above board about them and still give the reader a wonderfully romantic story. I loved Ollie and, after reading about his past, I so wanted to give him a big cuddle or something. As for Ben I loved how he was so tender and caring and could also be so dimwitted at times, it made him so easy to love. If you like gritty realistic romance with lots of sappiness and a great growth of relationship story then you need to read this one.

My Review: This had a lovely humorous turn to it that left me with a smile on my face.

My Review: This one had a much darker feel to it but I was delighted with the way the author faced the death of a family member and still managed to produce a really romantic story.

She has given the reader an amazing journey into action adventure with a sexy twist. Mason has to fight with his internal demons and hope that he won't put Frost into the enemies hands. Frost in the meantime uses Mason's lusts to keep him in check. I loved it. I just hope that Kim has many more Agamemnon stories to tell us.

Romance between vampire and human, Check. Hot sexy scenes, Check. Tension between Sire and Childe, Check. All the boxes keep getting checked but, seriously, this is one great story that keeps the reader on the edge with action and sexual tension from page one until the end and leaves me, for one, eager to read books two and three in this Blurred trilogy from within the Demon Age series.

My Review:Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Publisher Through NetGalley I had no idea when I received this book that it was number three in the series. Not that it made much difference as I was soon so deep into the story I just didn't want to stop reading. The action is fast paced and intense. The intrigue, dirty dealings and black ops secrets are believable and downright scary. The interaction between all the Characters is well written and made me want to be a part of the Phoenix Team. This had me on a roller coaster of emotions between scared rigid and moved to tears and deserves more than the five stars I've given it. I am now off to see if I can afford books one and two so that I can read more about everyone.

My Review:Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Publisher Through NetGalley . I loved this dark and dangerous story of Cannon and his rather tumultuous journey to his happy ending. Not that I didn't think at times that neither he, nor his partner in those travels, would ever survive, let alone get that happy ending. The world building in this book was outstanding and the logic of the way this dystopian world comes about is impeccable and (unfortunately) only too believable. I was on a rollercoaster of emotion from page one and it didn't let up with so many secondary characters that were equally as well written as Cannon and Rice. Book two has one of these as the heroine, and I can't wait to read all about her and her trials in this revolution fraught world that is on the cusp of changing, hopefully for the better.

My Review: To quote the blurb "she struggles to master the inherent magic of her dying race" and "will her discovery of an enchanted bow prove to be Ilan’s final salvation or her ultimate downfall?" So you would expect to read a lot about managing magic and an enchanted bow. Don't! There is very little mention of magic in this and the enchanted bow only turns up near the end of the story! This rather spoiled what was otherwise a pleasant fantasy story for me.

My Review: Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Author (Because she's my daughter and knows I'll be ruthlessly honest). This was a short but interesting story that somehow managed to get in a lot of background information on the Heroine who was feisty and yet also very vulnerable. Unfortunately I found that, apart from the Hero's manly attributes and the fact that he was a good captain, I didn't really get to know him as well as I did the Heroine, this is the reason for not giving it a 5* review. Apart from that small niggle I thoroughly enjoyed this story and think it's well worth a read if you have a half hour or so you want to fill in with something a little bit meaty.

My Review: Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Publisher Through NetGalley . As a first book in a new series this is very good at setting the scene for the Dragons and their enemies. It also has a very pleasant romance with a few rather nice sex scenes. I could have done with a little more action but that is a personal choice and doesn't reflect anything against the book. One thing I really did enjoy was that Cora had a much more realistic reaction to Stig's revelations about himself than is usual in a romance.

My Review: Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Author. This is the second book featuring Reandn of the Remote Wolf Patrol. I read book one last October and was gifted the second one to give an honest review. Well in my honest opinion this is even better than book one (if that's at all possible)and was so good I rarely put it down. The characters were wonderful and even the new ones sparkled off the pages. The magic was clever and Reandn's reactions to it very intense and intriguing. The political intrigue and the action was cleverly wrought as was the subtle undertones of mystery, suspense and romance. I really hope Ms Durgin will write a book three to the King's Wolf Saga following some of the other characters such as Teya or Rethia.

My Review:Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Author Unlike Kallysten's more erotic stories this one is much more genteel. This does not however mean it isn't a good story because it really is. Tristan and Deidre make a lovely couple and the story is short but sweet with just enough conflict to make it interesting. Deirdre also comes across as a really strong person that I would love to read more about, especially her interaction with the humans she protects. I hope Kallysten means to write more in this vein as even without hot sex scenes it was a story worth reading.

My Review: I loved book 1 and couldn't wait to read book 2 and the continuation of the stories. I wasn't disappointed at all. The Characters were just as fresh and exciting and the action was all out with some really lovely sexy romance scenes to liven it up even more. I am definitely going to be keeping my eyes open for more from these wonderful authors.

My Review: This had all the ingredients of a first class romance AND it made me cry - there was no way I could give it less than a 5* after that! The main Characters were full of real depth and I felt totally immersed in their romance from page one. The misunderstandings between the two are wonderfully portrayed and the 'research' done by Jaxon had me giggling as did his habit of naming body parts :D This is such a good book I am definitely going to bust my book fund trying to get book two (The Race Is On) as soon as possible.

It deals very explicitly with the relationship found between a Masochist and his dominating Sadistic partner. That's not to say it is just sex for sex sake as it isn't. It is a well thought out story that has hints of backstory about the society in which Adam and his Master find themselves. It also has a lot of interesting incidents of the power that the alien Master wields. Overall I enjoyed this short story and found it to be well worth a read.

My Review: Complimentary Review Copy Provided by Author The author describes this book very well when she says "Sherlock Holmes meets The Scarlet Pimpernel with Aliens". It's an interesting mix of Historical, Science Fiction and a kind of m/m Romantic Steampunk story that somehow works VERY well. The Characters are wonderful and the storyline is both a little amusing and very intriguing. I really didn't want to put it down once I had started reading it. I think I am a little disappointed that Kim Knox only intends this to be a trilogy. I think it could run and run if the author continues with the same style and passion as this one.

My Review: This one took me a while to get through because it is an online read but it was well worth it. The Characters are both well written and very interesting. The alien aspects of culture and form are well described and thought out. The sex scenes were hot and the romance was sweet. Slight spoiler but I feel the need to mention that I loved the male pregnancy and the misunderstandings the hormone problems bring about. If you like hot male on male, non tentacle, sex then this is for you. If you like a well thought out story about alien cultures and interaction this is also for you. In fact I cannot think of a single reason anyone would not want to read this story.

My Review: Amusing and action packed, a humorous space opera that packs a lot of story into 500 pages and a week of storyline. It was very reminiscent of spoofs like Galaxy Quest and Spaceballs and had me giggling to myself a few times, even though the overall story was quite serious. The Characters are all fairly well developed and my favourite was definitely the curmudgeonly Chief Engineer! The main Character of The Admiral had me thinking of Captain Kirk in the way he interacted with the female and always seemed to win out when getting in trouble, but he was also very uniquely himself. It was only after reading that I realised this was a debut novel by this author and I have to say he writes extremely well and I will be looking into getting his other stories. My only complaint is that the editing was a little shoddy and there were too many repeat and misspelled words and poor grammar (I know! I'm a one to talk about stuff like that but I don't claim to be an author!). Finally I do want to thank R J for recommending this to me on the strength of my love of Military Science Fiction, you were so right!

Mind you that's because I loved the story, it reminded me of all the Science Fiction adventure stories I loved as a youngster and I wanted to read more about Henry Gallant and his adventures. The Characters were well drawn and the adventures were well thought out, with an easy to read style that made it enjoyable. I look forward to reading more in The Henry Gallant Saga.

It is a High Fantasy novel in a very typical R A Salvatore style, this means that it is wordy and emotional and (for me) takes a long time to get into at the beginning. If you enjoy Dungeons & Dragons, Michael Moorcock's Elric books or Piers Anthony then you are more than likely going to enjoy this story of The Forgotten Realms.

This is an easy read with lots of hot sex but, more than that, it has plenty of intrigue and romance to spice it up. I started off feeling like both Tank and Shelby needed to be smacked upside the head, through wanting to give them both cuddles to finally heaving a sigh of relief at the ending. My Review: I really liked this story, it had plenty of drama and romance but it never got too gushy or morbid. The consequences of their school days reverberates through their relationship, showing that our pasts always have some influence on who we are now. Ms Sunday gives us a wonderful story that grabs from page one and keeps you interested until the last page. Mind you having a really cute kid in there doesn't hurt either :D

My Review: Complimentary Copy provided by Author in exchange for an honest review I liked this latest episode of the Ward Of The Vampire ongoing story. The Characters are filling out nicely and there are glimpses of more behind the scenes that are very intriguing. I liked that it was a quick and easy read but am now unhappy at having to wait for the next installment. One warning though you need to read these stories in order to getthe best out of them!

My Review: I am not one to read books about religion or monks as a rule but there was something about the blurb on this one that made me try and win it. Lucky me I won and I am ever so glad I did as it was so good. The religion was there but in such a way as to give the reader a sense of the history and birth of the Christian belief alongside the pagan beliefs of the time. The actions of the Vikings as they raided the monasteries is well known but this story brought it to life and made it seem so very real. I felt as if I was living through all the turmoil that the main character endured and I was moved to tears (so naturally this gets a 5* for that emotional pull)but I was also amazed at the accuracy and intensity that came over in every word. I believe that people should read this even if they aren't very religious as it's one of those stories that will stay with you and influence how you think in the future.

My Review: I loved this story. It was full of emotion and reality. The plight of trying to survive in a harsh physical and economical environment came through in every word. Yet the love that grows between the two main characters softened the harshness just right. The author had some great lines and a plethora of Gaelic in the book and it was well worth reading just for those.

My Review: A free story that had good world building and an interesting plot. Could have done with a lot more story. Hope the author writes more from this couple.

He only has one option left. He has to run.
My Review: I haven't read any of the previous ones in this series but it didn't make too much difference as each story is about a different couple and the world building is pretty good so I knew what the background was. I enjoyed the misunderstandings and mishaps the two main characters encounter on their way to a happy ending and if I ever want another short, enjoyable read I will look for others from this series.

My Review: This was another short read but it was rather well written and gave a fair amount of background for so few words.The romance between Connor and Davis felt a bit rushed but was sweet despite that and the meeting the family bit was rather amusing. Overall I think I will be on the look out for more by this author.

My Review:Jin, Ken and Sky return in this fifth episode of Hidden Talents and I enjoyed every word. My only complaint was the long wait for it to be available to read and the shortness of the story overall.

My Review: Very short and full of action. A nice introduction to the world of The Biomass Revolution. It tells the story from the viewpoint of the Squad's leader and is mostly his introspective thoughts whilst on a dangerous run back to the camp. If you haven't read any of the series it won't matter at all as the relevant information is given.

Plus a bunch of reads that only warranted 1* for various reasons like no proper story or felt like I'd been dumped into the story halfway through with no explanations. Also some of them were badly written too.

My Review: A quick enjoyable read with some lovely sex scenes and sweet romance. I liked the way the titles were both indicative of the story and also a cocktail that one of the main characters drank.

My Review: I love Vampire and Shifter stories and this was fairly good for such a short one. It had some lovely humour and a fair bit of action. My only complaint is that it was too short and didn't really flesh out the world as much as it could have.

My Review: I wish this had been a longer story as it had all the elements of a great novel. Solid characters and storyline as well as plenty of good world building and backstory for it's length. My only other complaint is that a romance was hinted at but never actually came to fruition by the end of the story. Hopefully the author will write a continuation and give the reader more of the romance and this really intriguing world.

My Review: An interesting concept for this story and I enjoyed reading it, even though it was a little bit 'bromancey' for a Science Fiction story. I was totally surprised at the ending as it wasn't quite what I expected it to be, yet somehow, after the fact, it made a lot of sense to me too. If you enjoy good Characters, an action and intrigue story with surprise endings then this is for you.

I was hooked and, after reluctantly returning my copy to the library, I went out and bought everything I could from her. I continued my love affair with this brilliant writer until the day she died. So as you can imagine I couldn't resist reading this book telling me stories about her from people who REALLY knew her. It was poignant and informative and is a truly wonderful tribute to a truly wonderful woman.

My Review: One Word- Epic! Both in scope and in length. This story had me from page one and kept me reading about Kei and Arman and the way they grew, learned and overcame all sorts of troubles to come out better on the other side. It had me laughing at snarky comments, crying at loss and pain and smiling at romances and happy scenes. It was a story with twists and turns and raw hate and deep love and I was sorry to get to the end as I felt so deeply involved with all the characters in it.

My Review: I really liked this story and the way it followed the main two characters and their interactions via email. I've read post apocalypse stories that have dwelt overly long on the fall of humanity, and I've read others that try to emphasize the ability of humanity to conquer all, but this one was so much better than that. It focused on the way most people would feel which is bewildered and scared and generally a little paranoid. Especially as they learn about their abilities and how to use them. In fact this would have got a 5* if not for my pet hate of a cliffhanger ending - though I have to admit it was a great way to make me want to read book two!!

My Review: I loved this book. Auntie Social is a great character, but the man behind her is even better. He is vulnerable and sincere and in so much pain at the loss of his true love through AIDS. He is inspiring in the way he uses that loss to raise awareness and funds to fight a disease that is still around today - reminding the reader through the story that this is so. I wept as he told his story and I felt a glimmer of hope at the end when the journalist admits to his own loss and they feel a need to look for renewal together. T A Webb deserves the 5* for making me feel so much and think about what the gay community still live with every day.
